He’s such a play on expectation-first appearing as grumpy, cold claymore man, only good for smashing stuff. But you’re right, she lacks a strong personal tie to DS, which is a shame. I like her arch-she goes from emotionally stoic, detached empiricist to appreciating beauty and mystery of emotional/spiritual bonds. I’d really love it if a pro-Aphra player would share from a RP perspective how she works for their character. They’re a bridge couple-almost a symbol of how the old and new world can live together. Definitely a great partner for the all-native/queen Deirdre DS, but also a king Dunncas run. She and DS have the native heritage in common, but also the shared experience of losing their mothers to circumstances beyond their control. It says a lot that she’s gracious enough to try understanding the renaigse even though they’ve hurt her people. A good partner for a DS who wants freedom. RP wise, I see a life with Vasco being about embracing that heritage and escaping the burdens of the island. ![]() He & DS share Naut heritage, and it’s a foil-DS is seaborn given to the nobles, Vasco is noble born but sea given. I ain’t feeling the poetry so much either, lol, but it’s sweet. Thinking from a role playing perspective, there’s something to recommend about each companion based on who your DS is. I appreciate that despite the sparse conversation (and the need to read into what little we get) the characterizations came across solidly. I definitely agree with all your assessments. Vasco makes sense for a de Sardet joining the Nauts, Siora for a de Sardet gone native, Kurt and de Sardet have a shared past, but Aphra doesn't get the deeper connections of the others. Aphra is the odd woman out here - she's not connected to the main plot/de Sardet's identity the way the other 3 are. (Vasco and Siora use the same one.) I have a mod that randomly alternates scenes. Aphra has the nicest love scene animation, imo. Also, it wraps Kurt's arc nicely - his personal arc deals with developing an identity separate from the Coin Guard and a romance is a nicer ending than "and he's continued as de Sardet's bodyguard forever," which doesn't make much sense if de Sardet's run off to join the Nauts. Kurt has the strongest voice acting, is adorably unsure of himself throughout, and I had to laugh at de Sardet's response to the "do you still want to do this?" part. And it definitely makes the most sense if you do a Queen Derdre playthrough. Siora's initial "how do renaigse do romance? That's stupid, I'll do it my way" is cute.
